Approximately one week before his death on January 5, 1995, Ben Rich — second director of Lockheed Skunk Works (1975–1991), developer of the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, and F-117 Stealth — called aerospace author Jim Goodall from USC Medical Center. Rich's statement according to Goodall: 'Jim, we have things out in the desert that are 50 years beyond what you can comprehend. If you've seen it in Star Wars or Star Trek, we've been there, done that, or decided it wasn't worth the effort.'
This statement complements a series of earlier statements by Rich: (1) UCLA lecture March 23, 1993: 'There is an error in the equations — we have figured it out and now know how to travel to the stars.' (2) Same lecture: 'We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects.' (3) WPAFB lecture 1993 (slide: black disc): 'The Air Force has just given us a contract to take ET back home.' (4) Letter to John Andrews (July 21, 1986): 'I'm a believer in both categories [man-made + ET UFOs]. I feel everything is possible.'
ASSESSMENT: Jim Goodall is a respected aerospace author with direct access to Skunk Works personnel. The phone quote has been consistently reported by multiple independent sources. Steven Greer names Goodall as a direct witness. Critics note that Rich was known for making ambiguous statements — the 'ET home' joke began as a Spielberg reference. The consistency over decades and multiple independent sources gives the testimony considerable weight.
