Robert Scott Lazar is the most well-known Area 51 whistleblower in history. Since his first TV interview in May 1989 (KLAS Las Vegas, journalist George Knapp, initially under the pseudonym 'Dennis' with his face concealed) he has claimed to have worked at a secret sub-site called 'S-4' near Papoose Lake (south of Area 51). There, he alleges, he was involved in reverse engineering of 9 extraterrestrial craft. According to Lazar, the propulsion system was based on Element 115 (not yet synthesized at the time), which generates a gravitational wave that 'folds' the spacecraft. In 2003, scientists synthesized Element 115 (Moscovium) for the first time β€” however, with a half-life of only 0.65 seconds, not stable as claimed by Lazar. Lazar's educational and employment records are largely debunked: MIT and Caltech have no records of him. He claims his files were deleted. A 1982 Los Alamos phone book contains his name β€” which confirms his connection to the laboratory, but not his role as a physicist. Lazar was the subject of a 2019 documentary by Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp ('Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers') and in 2026 of one by Luigi Vendittelli ('S4: The Bob Lazar Story'). He has appeared multiple times on the Joe Rogan Podcast. Lazar today operates United Nuclear Scientific Equipment and Supplies in Michigan.
